We buy from an important community craft platform set up to maintain the crafts, heritage and cultural ecology of the area.
PAINTING ON CLOTH - the particular technique of painting on fabric within this community uses thick brightly coloured paint made with castor seed oil. Artisans place a small amount of this paint paste into their palm and using a metal rod carefully apply patterns and motifs onto the fabric before it is left to dry in the sun.
LACQUER PAINTING ON WOOD
Lac Turned wood is practiced using simple tools - a self-made lathe, a string attached to a bow and sticks of coloured lac. Once the wood is carved into a product, the coloured lacquer is applied to the wood by heat through turning with the hand lathe. The artisan manoeuvres the lacquered colours to create patterns or blocks of colours, unique to the area. Lac, has been used in Indian craft for centuries.
